2006
Rend The Heavens officially went on hiatus in 2002, when we left YWAM. After a year in Florida at FullSail, a recording school, we re-created the band in Nashville with Matt and Sarah Hellems, along with our friend Mike Olsen on drums. I (Aaron) had been working with producer Brown Bannister in Nashville, and we used his studio for a few days to record the Son Of God EP.
Son Of God was a compilation album, sort of. We took some of what we thought were our best songs from over the years, and added a few new ones. This record was an enormous leap forward in terms of production… you could call it our first “professional” album. Co-engineered by the amazing Steve Bishir (Brown’s main engineer), and mixed by our good friend Craig Alvin, this album sounded really, really good when we finished it.
Interestingly enough, the title track “Son Of God” wasn’t originally going to be on the record. But after the first day of recording, when we had finished all the songs we planned to record, we thought “Wow. We should do some more songs!” I threw together a demo of a song I’d been working on, showed it to the band, and it ended up being our favorite song on the record! (and the title track)
It’s worth noting, as well, that “Glorious Martyr” is considered by many people to be one of the best Rend The Heavens songs ever written. My wife Jillian wrote the lyrics to that song, and it originally appeared on the 2001 album “Longings”.
